The Assembly of French Polynesia – A Glimpse into the Heart of Polynesian Politics
The Assembly of French Polynesia is the country’s only political body directly elected by the people. Located in the heart of Papeete, at Taraho’i Square, the building sits on the historic grounds that once housed the royal palace of the Pomare family.
Fun Facts:
• The President of French Polynesia is elected by the Assembly from among its members.
• The Assembly’s role is to consider and adopt laws, deliberations, opinions, and resolutions for the country.
• Although French is the official language of French Polynesia, debates within the Assembly are also conducted in Polynesian language.
• The Assembly is set within a 1,200 m² park, with a stream running through it, separating the gardens of the Assembly from the High Commissioner’s residence. This park was once the personal grounds of Queen Aimata Pomare IV, complete with her private garden and freshwater basin where she bathed.
• It is possible to visit the Assembly’s gardens during the day, offering a peaceful escape—a welcomed bubble of oxygen amidst the hustle and bustle of the city.
