One-on-one with Apaura Walker

In honor of International Women’s Day that took place on March 8, we’d like to bring this month’s spotlight on Apaura Walker, a remarkable Polynesian woman making an impactful difference in her community.

Apaura serves in the local police force of Arue, a small district on the east coast of Tahiti, and she stands out as one of the few women in the force.

What makes Apaura’s work truly exceptional is her ability to connect with youth who are facing difficult challenges, particularly in dealing with addiction and personal struggles. She doesn’t just enforce the law; she brings a level of empathy and vulnerability that allows her to break down barriers with at-risk teenagers. Apaura’s approach offers these young people a safe space to open up about their deepest fears, doubts, and concerns—something that often feels out of reach in a world that may not always offer understanding.

Apaura hails from the Austral Islands, where her family lineage is deeply rooted in the traditions of wisdom keepers.

It’s this wisdom that Apaura embodies and shares, allowing her to bridge the gap between the struggles of today’s youth and the teachings of her heritage. Through her work, she nurtures a space where young people feel seen, heard, and supported.

We honor Apaura not only for her role in law enforcement but for her dedication to healing and empowerment, showing the true strength that comes with vulnerability, compassion, and wisdom.
