Tahuata
Tahuata is accessible by boat from Hiva Oa, a short stretch of sea separates the two islands.
Marquesas archipelago
Tahuata is the smallest of the inhabited Marquesan islands, just 61 km².
In the shadow of its imposing mountain, Mt. Tumu Meae Ufa, standing nearly 1200 m above sea-level, deeply divided by four steep valleys, Tahuata hides a rich heritage of ancient stone carvings.
Little visited by tourists, the island is a haven of serenity and willingly reveals its history and creativity to the lucky few. The island has many attractions, both natural and cultural. On the east coast you find beautiful white-sand beaches. In Vaitahu, a visit to the church is well worthwhile for the eclectic blend of European and Marquesan decoration. The abundant archaeological remains alone justify the journey.
Tahuata’s sculptors are true artists, superb objects such as lances, war clubs and bowls are finely carved from bone and hardwoods growing on the island or rosewood. The crafts’ center in the quaint little village of Hapatoni and the museum at the village hall in Vaitahu exhibit these pieces of art.

TAHUATA, the island of Mono'i
Tahuata is also known for the quality of its’ mono’i , produced using secret ancestral methods. Mono’i is a tiare-flower infused coconut oil, often scented with other fragrant plants. Marquesan mono’i is rich and intoxicating with sensual perfumes such as vetiver, sandalwood and ylang-ylang. The oil is essential for use in Polynesian massage, another skill transmitted orally from generation to generation.
