Your excursion will start by the visit of the Gauguin cultural centre and the Brel area. You will board a 4x4 for a ride along the south coast of the island towards Taaoa.
Located in a valley at the back of the bay, Taaoa is easily accessible from Atuona through a coastal road, offering beautiful panoramas over the bay and the Hanakee’s rock.
Situated right beside a black sandy beach, very famous for surfing, this little town has a pretty stone church.
Taaoa valley, which houses the big ceremonial center of Upeke, is very important in the marquesan mythology. This archaeological site, regarded as the biggest in Polynesia, covers several hectares, split into many platforms. Only a little area has been restored. You will discover ancient houses, the enigmatic tikis, sacrificial altars... The visit enables visitors to imagine the lives of elders marquesans.
